South Union MVC

June 02, 2024

On Sunday, June 2, 2024 at 19:21 hours the Ellendale Fire Company along with Sussex County EMS and Delaware State Police Aviation Section were alerted for an MVC with rollover in the 15000 block of S. Union Church Road. Past Fire Chief Moore was returning in the area and arrived on scene first confirming one subject trapped.
Command 75 and Rescue 75-6 arrived on location to find a single female patient trapped upside down in the vehicle with significant intrusion into the passenger compartment. Compounding the extrication, the patients long hair had gone out of the moon roof when the vehicle rolled, and the weight of the vehicle was now resting on her hair in close proximity to the patients scalp.
Crews from Rescue 75-6 began to stabilize the vehicle and prepare for lifting while an additional rescue from Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. was requested to assist. Crews from Engine 75-3 and Engine/Tanker 75-8 arrived on location and assisted with stabilization and extrication. Crews from Ellendale and Bridgeville worked together to lift the vehicle and remove the patient.
The patient was transferred to EMS and taken to a local hospital. The roadway remained closed by Ellendale Fire Police for approximately 90 minutes until the vehicle and debris were removed.
